Hello Loveliess, I hope you’re all warm and well.
Now the UK heatwave has calmed down a little, I can get my blogging mojo back. The past week or two has been absolutely boiling and I’ve been to hot to function. This country doesn’t cope well with extreme weather, and neither do I. I wanted to make this post and tell you all about my first month at slimming world. Could be helpful to anyone thinking of joining or just a little refresher for existing members. Let’s dive straight in.
About the plan
As an ex slimming world member, I already had a decent understanding of the plan. There’s been a few changes in the years I missed but nothing major. Essentially, Slimming world isn’t a “diet” but a more maintainable, healthier way of eating. Really, there’s only 3 steps to the plan so it isn’t too overwhelming or confusing.
STEP ONE- FREE FOODS
“Free foods” are unlimited, you can pile up the plate with all these yummy foods. The free foods are super good for you and will keep you feeling fuller for longer. These include things like fresh fruit and veg, pasta, rice, lean cuts of meat and eggs. A lot of the fruit and veg is labeled “speedy” these are the foods that will boost your weight loss. It’s recommended you fill at least a third of your plate with speed food.
STEP TWO- HEALTHY EXTRA’S
You get an A choice of either milk or cheese, and a B choice of bread, cereals or canned fruit/soups. These extras have to be measured and you’re allowed one of each, every single day. Examples of an A choice would be 40g reduced fat cheddar cheese or 350ml skimmed milk. Some examples of a B choice would be 60g of any wholemeal bread/roll, two weetabix or two slimming world hi-fi bars. These are just a few examples, there’s lots of choices to mix things up a little.
STEP THREE- SYNS
Syns are basically, anything else. You can enjoy between 5-15 per day. Everything that isn’t mentioned above has a syn value. Example being, a standard 45g bar of dairy milk = 12 syns. Pretty hefty right? It’s down to you how you want to use your syns, whether you want a sweet treat, some jarred sauce, a glass of wine or an extra slice of bread.
How have I got on in my first month at slimming world?
Probably why you’re all hear right? I rejoined in on the 30th June and since then I’ve had “slimmer of the week” on my 3rd week, and this week I achieved my half stone award. In total I’ve lost 7.5lbs within 5 weeks. My progress has been slow and steady. I’ve had a loss each week which I’m really proud of! With this plan, I don’t feel I’ve deprived myself of anything. I still enjoy eating, I still allow myself treats, but I’ve learnt how to eat in moderation. Literally, I used to think nothing of scoffing a family sized bar of chocolate in one go and swishing it down with a huge can of relentless. Now, I’ve learnt I can enjoy smaller amount and actually value it more.
So, my first month at slimming world hasn’t been easy by any means. The staff room at work is constantly full of chocolate, cakes, biscuits and all kinds of other things I know I can’t have. I’ve tried to meal prep more to avoid temptation and it’s somewhat working. Don’t get me wrong I have secretly munched away on chocolate cake and donuts but I’m able to turn that around and not let it ruin my entire week.
Plan for August
Being realistic, I’d like to lose another 7lbs in August. That would take me to a stone weight loss in 9-10 weeks. It’s certainly do-able, I just need to stay on track. I’m going to be using a booklet called “get set for success”. It’s basically a book for planning, meal idea’s, reflection and just digging a little deeper into my eating habits. I’ve heard in group that it’s really useful and some members have done incredibly well using it. There’s a few minor things during August that might set me back a little, but if I stay motivated and plan ahead hopefully it’s won’t become an issue.
If you’re interested in following my journey, I will be posting monthly updates a bit like this one. With progress, tips, meal idea’s and all kinds of other exciting things. Also, I get weighed on Saturday morning’s and I usually tweet how I got on. Head over to twitter to stay in the loop.
That’s all from me
Kisses and Love
